City of Refuge is a local nonprofit in West Atlanta helping “individuals and families transition out of crisis.” (City of Refuge). The organization provides free technology training to qualifying applicants through the Tech Transformation Academy following a substantial grant from the Department of Labor (DoL).
“The Tech Transformation Academy is designed to quickly give you the skills needed to land a rewarding career in technology. Our programs are taught by DigitalCrafts and Carolina Cyber.” (City of Refuge).
This development is detrimental to the Atlanta area, with job opportunities being provided to underserved communites.
“During the last six months, City of Refuge has worked with DigitalCrafts and Carolina Cyber Center to strategically curate the program to address the barriers that hinder individuals from gainful employment due to systemic and cyclical poverty in the nonprofit’s surrounding neighborhood.” (City Biz).
The Academy was funded by a federal DoL grant at the amount of $5.4 million. Participants will be trained in a variety of subjects having to do with web development and cyber-security. According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, this method of training is an effective way to get professionals into the workplace.
“Training bootcamps have become an increasingly popular way to skill workers for careers in the technology industry. Hiring workers based on skills and certifications rather than four-year degrees helps companies broaden their application pool and opens opportunities for high-paying jobs to more people.” (Atlanta Business Chronicle).
The cyber-security workforce needs bolstering considering recent large-scale cyber-attacks, and City of Refuge Workforce Innovation Hub Director Jeannie Ross believes the program could fill a large need for workers in the technology sector in Atlanta.
"Airbnb, Microsoft, and all the companies that are moving to Atlanta. Oh my gosh, the sky's the limit. And the same thing with cyber-security. Just look at what we went through with cyber-security with the colonial pipeline and Cobb County," she said. (Fox5 Atlanta).
Upon completion of the program, participants will have the necessary skills to be placed in the work field as a web developer or software engineer with reputable companies. The Academy ensures that participants will have the opportunity to procure one of the placements for a job or internship.
“Having that established employer network allows DigitalCrafts and City of Refuge to bypass college degree requirements because of their reputation among tech companies, said Natalie Cataldo, the student success manager at DigitalCrafts.” (Atlanta Business Chronicle).
The program offers countless opportunities to expand not only one’s skillset but also the resources available to be a better hire.
“Throughout their training, students will have access to a full array of social services and support, including one-on-one mentoring provided by corporate partners such as Cox Enterprises, Elavon, EY and UPS for at least one year, as well as job readiness training consisting of resume building, soft skills and personal development.” (City Biz).
If a participant does not procure a job placement after completing the program, they leave with esteemed skills valuable in professional careers.
" You can teach anybody to do a certain skill but learning how to be a good employee, how to show up on time. Soft skills and leadership skills will be a part of what they hear over and over again. So that when someone graduates and goes to work, they'll be more equipped to have a business relationship," Ross said. (Fox5 Atlanta).
