A few days ago, Google warned that threat actors and Internet Service Providers (ISPs), could be teaming up to implement spyware.

“Research released by Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) claims that internet service providers (ISPs) participated in a spyware campaign, including disabling victims’ mobile data. The tech giant’s findings seem to corroborate similar claims made by the security research team at Lookout, who linked the spyware to RCS labs, a company that provide “technical support” to law enforcement agencies.” (Tech Co).

Spyware is malicious software designed to gather sensitive information.

“On June 16th, security researchers at Lookout linked the firm to Hermit, a spyware program believed to have been first deployed in 2019 by Italian authorities as part of an anti-corruption operation. Lookout describes RCS Labs as an NSO Group-like entity. The firm markets itself as a “lawful intercept” business and claims it only works with government agencies.” (EnGadget).

The spyware can infiltrate your device in a multitude of ways.

“According to Google, Hermit can infect both Android and iOS devices. In some instances, the company’s researchers observed malicious actors work with their target’s internet service provider to disable their data connection. They would then send the target an SMS message with a prompt to download the linked software to restore their internet connection. If that wasn’t an option, the bad actors attempted to disguise the spyware as a legitimate messaging app like WhatsApp or Instagram.” (EnGadget).

Users may benefit from using a protective program to prevent this incident from occurring on their devices.

“It’s unclear whether a VPN would have helped any users in this situation. VPNs make it nigh-on impossible for your internet service provider to attribute the traffic you’re producing to you, and are a great tool to battle government censorship and preserve your privacy – but you need something else to protect yourself against things like Hermit. Your best bet against spyware is definitely antivirus software for mobiles. Avast, for example, has a free spyware remover and cleaner tool available for both Android and iOS (as well as Mac), as well as a premium security offering with a wealth of features.” (Tech Co).
