The use of ChatGPT and similar AI programs has been banned for employees of Samsung following a data breach through uploading sensitive code information to the platform.

“Samsung engineers unintentionally uploaded internal source code to ChatGPT earlier in April. A corporate official acknowledged that a message prohibiting the use of generative AI services had been sent last week, according to a Bloomberg report.” (Interesting Engineering.)

Samsung sent a memo regarding the ban and breach which was reported by Bloomberg. Samsung is not the only company to ban the use of AI generators.

“The use of generative AI has drawn criticism from many sources, including Samsung. Some Wall Street financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bank of America Corp., and Citigroup Inc., either outlawed or restricted its use in February.” (Interesting Engineering.)

Samsung employees were aware of the risk of ChatGPT and other similar AI programs according to the Bloomberg report.

“In an internal survey conducted by the company last month, 65 percent of respondents said that AI tools pose a security risk, the report said.” (The Hill).

This does not mean that AI will not be used any longer at Samsung. They will develop their own AI program according to Bloomberg.

“The company said that the use of AI programs would be banned on company devices and asked employees to not submit company information to these programs on their personal devices. Samsung is in progress of developing its own AI program and said in the memo that it is working ‘to create a secure environment for safely using generative AI.’” (The Hill).
